VAVILOVIA

Advanced search

The journal VAVILOVIA, named after the eminent Russian scientist N.I. Vavilov, is a specialized periodical scientific publication, released concurrently in digital and printed formats. It is focused on publishing original botanical articles of both theoretical and practical nature, and taxonomic and genetic overviews. Its main areas of interest, primarily oriented towards applied botany, may encompass plant systematics and phylogeny, anatomy and morphology, studies on geography and origin of cultivated plants and their wild relatives. Besides, a special space is allotted on its pages for the results of genetic research to be published, including such areas as genomics, genotype systematics, molecular phylogenetics and population genetics of cultivated plants and their relatives. In addition, there are plans to publish botanical chronicles in the journal: brief reports on core events (expeditions, conferences, courses, etc.), anniversaries of institutions and scientists, losses suffered by science, etc. The journal is published four times a year. The languages of the publications are Russian and English. Publications in the journal are free of charge.

BOTANICAL COLLECTIONS: ANALYSIS AND TYPIFICATION

3-18 167
Abstract

In accordance with the rules of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants, nomenclatural standards have been prepared for four raspberry cultivars, namely ‘Nadezhda’ (WIR-109190), ‘Rannij Sûrpriz’ (WIR-109188), ‘Samarskai͡a Plotnai͡a’ (WIR-109187), ‘Studenčeskai͡a’ (WIR- 109189) and two strawberry cultivars ‘Vympel’ (WIR-109185) and ‘Feâ’ (WIR-109186) bred by the Scientific Research Institute of Horticulture and Medicinal Plants “Zhiguli Gardens”. The nomenclatural standard for each cultivar is represented by herbarium sheets containing the plant parts whose characters are necessary for determining the cultivar affiliation. For raspberries, these are the primocane and floricane middle thirds, a leaf from the shoot middle part and lateral shoots with flowers and fruits. For strawberries, these are the whole plant, a leaf, and a shoot with flowers and fruits. The herbarium sheets are supplemented with photographs. Nomenclatural standards are preserved in the Herbarium of Cultivated Plants of the World, their Wild Relatives and Weeds (WIR) of the N.I. Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources and registered in the VIR Herbarium database. The article presents brief descriptions of the cultivars, including the data on their registration in the State Register of the Russian Federation, and economically important characteristics.

SYSTEMATICS, FLORISTICS, POPULATION BOTANY

Abstract

The article contains information about the location of a new, relatively large local population of Lonicera caerulea L. s. l in the Kolpinsky District of St. Petersburg. Two finds are located north of the Balkan Military Cemetery, one of which is located in a small-leaved forest (the main population), while the other is a large single plant at a short distance from the first find, near a small eutrophic reservoir.

PLANT MORPHOLOGY AND ANATOMY

Abstract

Seed coat surface features are traditionally considered taxonomically significant. The seed surface ultrastructure of 13 Melilotus Mill. species growing in Russia and neighboring countries was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at magnifications of ×500–2000. The material for the study was obtained from the Herbarium of the Komarov Botanical Institute (LE).

As a result, the ultrasculptural features of the seed coat surface were described. The revealed differences between the species are determined by the morphological characteristics of the outer periclinal walls of the epidermal cells (primary sculpture): 11 species of the subgenus Melilotus (M. albus Medik., M. altissimus Thuill., M. arenarius Grec., M. dentatus (Waldst. & Kit.) Pers., M. hirsutus Lipsky, M. officinalis (L.) Pall., M. polonicus (L.) Pall., M. scythicus O.E. Schulz, M. suaveolens Ledeb., M. tauricus (M. Bieb.) Ledeb., M. wolgicus Poir.) and two species (M. indicus (L.) All. and M. spicatus (Sm.) Breistr.) of the subgenus Micromelilotus O.E. Schulz have a characteristic tuberculate sculpture formed by the outer periclinal walls of the epidermal cells, which are convex to varying degrees and have their own peculiar morphological features.

The cuticle covering epidermal cells of the seed surface forms the secondary sculpture: either smooth with folds in M. albus, M. arenarius, M. dentatus, M. indicus, M. officinalis, M. suaveolens, M. spicatus, M. tauricus and M. wolgicus; or a reticular-wrinkled as in M. hirsutus Lipsky, M. polonicus (L.) Pall., M. scythicus O.E.Schulz; or tabular as in M. altissimus Thuill. The secondary sculpture of the seed surface of M. altissimus has a distinctive tabular character that can serve as a diagnostic feature.
